5G in Automotive

Envision how 5G supports innovation of automotive industry

Ericsson's 5G rollout targeted several industries, with the automotive sector identified as a prime beneficiary. The promise of ultra-fast, low-latency communication allowed for the realization of 'connected cars', capable of real-time data analysis and autonomous decision-making. This breakthrough presented opportunities to democratize driving, potentially empowering individuals with visual impairments to experience independent mobility.

It was a marketing piece but definitely an exciting piece that made me thinking all possibilities a car can have

A user-centered approach was employed, beginning with the identification, prioritization, and grouping of key functionalities. These were subsequently integrated into the screen frameworks, which thoughtfully retained a driver seat for necessary manual intervention.

Crucially, 5G-enabled data was incorporated, expanding the information set beyond traditional parameters and showcasing the potential for real-time, high-bandwidth data integration. This included features that are optimized based on live data, and enhanced situational awareness through sensor fusion, all made possible by 5G's low-latency and high-capacity capabilities. Based on screen placement, information was categorized as read-only or interactive, and driver-specific or shared.

The design process progressed with visual explorations that integrated animated feedback for critical functions, including turn indications and hazard warnings. Visual development was guided by the company's established branding, with the addition of stylistic elements to convey a futuristic impression. This futuristic vision was further amplified by the 5G integration, which hinted at the seamless connectivity and data-driven experiences that will define the next generation of in-vehicle interfaces.
